National Finals - Torquay 2002

Truly a local band,Torbay Brass Band was formed in 1976 by a group of local people who were employed at  the South Devon College, who showed an enthusiasm for brass playing. The band grew very quickly attracting players from the Torbay area and was able to add to its strength a junior training band that today forms the very active Torbay Concert Brass. The current band still retains its local connections through its members who  like their predecessors are very proud to carry the name of Torbay wherever they go.

The band quickly established itself in the contesting world and joined the South West Brass Band Association where it worked its way through the nationally graded sections of the brass band world. The band achieved national success in 1993 when the band won the 2nd Section National Championship in London. Since then the band has continued to be successful in contests and is always considered by the 'impartial band contesting anorak'  to be a band that you ignore at your peril when competing against them.

The band has a very active engagement diary and concert schedule that encompasses charity concerts for which the band has raised much needed funds for a variety of organisations. Open-air concerts on the sea front in Torquay which are very popular with holidaymakers and residents alike, and trips overseas where the band is very well received. So much so they have have even been heard on a Swiss radio programme. The band performs at many other events in addition to its continued  participation in contests both at local and national level.
